Gorgeously Fighting Cancer

& Family Sessions, High School Seniors.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Ashlee Jensen had no idea just how many times she would recite this famous quote in the coming months regardless of the fact that she just tattooed it onto the right side of her chest and shoulder. She chose that saying because her “outlook on life has always reflected” this particular statement.
Ashlee has been gorgeously fighting cancer since February  2013. She was living a normal life of a 19-year-old: attending college to become a dental assistant, eagerly hanging out with friends at any given chance, and lighting up a room with that contageous smile and sparkling blue eyes. But Ashlee’s world stopped when she was diagnosed with stage 3 Peripheral T-Cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. A cancer that is so rare that only 1 only 3 million in the U.S. are diagnosed with it. So rare, that there are no known case studies, experimental procedures or statistics for Ashlee and her family to review, research, or compare their own experiences with. This leaves Ashlee not only terrified at the simple fact of having cancer, but terrified at living in the unknown and having no idea what to expect.
I first met Ashlee in 2011 when I had the joy of taking her senior photos. With senior portraits, I typically remember one main thing about each student. With Ashlee, I remembered two: her amazing blue eyes and her “Believe” tattoo on her right foot. Here eyes were so full of life and the deepest blue I had ever seen. Her tattoo, so perfect that I took a picture to showcase it.
When I learned that Ashlee had been diagnosed with cancer, I immediately knew that I wanted to do a photoshoot with her. But before I could contact her, Ashlee contacted me. She had already had a round of chemo and knew she would begin losing her hair. She wanted to document a point in her journey without her hair, but with enough energy  to show the world that cancer has not (and will not) phase her.
Honestly, without the obvious sign that this 19 year-old was battling cancer, I would have had no idea. Her attitude has not been jaded, her determination is inspiring, and her enthusiasm is humbling. To interact with such a positive person who is fighting cancer is encouraging, but at the same time made me feel inadequate for not approaching my healthy life with as much tenacity as Ashlee is. It seems cancer did not change the way of life for her, but just amplified it. This amazing woman seems to have prepared herself for this obstacle years before she was diagnosed. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” “Believe,” “Sisters,” and the most recent art added to her canvas only weeks after being diagnosed, “Fight Like A Girl.” I saw a quote on her personal Facebook timeline that read something along the lines of, “I was given this fight because I can handle it.” If anyone can battle, fight and beat cancer, it’s Ashlee and her friends and family.
The most recent news that we have received is that Ashlee’s body is responding wonderously to the chemo treatments. I believe she has one more round of chemo treatments to do, a stem-cell transplant, and fingers crossed for remission!

Tips

What to wear: With the natural and neutral colors of 1900, the same will work for you: creams, tans, whites, grays, and browns will look awesome. But anything will work. As always for any family session, try to coordinate outfits within the same color palette. Just try not to mix strong colors together (ie lime green & red)
What to bring: You are not required to bring a thing, but if you want a prop or two that is fine (no animals please). If you want to  make it super fun bring some crazy hats, paper mustaches, or silly props. You may want to bring your check book in case you find an awesome treasure at 1900 and reap the benefits of the exclusive 15% off!
What to do: Try to arrive at least 5 minutes before your session to be sure you get your full 25 minutes. If you can’t make it, please try your best to inform me…even a last minute text is fine!

Each mini-session I hold, I sell out pretty quickly, so I recommend booking as soon as you can. Click the link below to select your time on Saturday the 6th!

Sibling Photo Session-Spokane Photography

& Family Sessions.

I had the pleasure of dedicating 2 hours to a young sibling photo session last week and could not be more pleased with the results. These two were at the perfect ages to take direction and still be silly at the same time. Mom had shared some Pinterest ideas with me prior to the shoot so I knew she was looking for a few gorgeous close-up head shots of her precious children. How could she not with those beautiful faces? I felt I was photographing Kids GAP models!
We started at a local park then headed to downtown Spokane for a few more shots for a little different feel. Not every family thinks about doing a sibling photo session, but I know their family will cherish these amazing photos for years upon years!Spokane Family Photography Spokane Family Photography Spokane Family Photography Spokane Family Photography Spokane Family Photography Spokane Family Photography Sibling Photo Session Sibling Photo Session Sibling Photo Session Sibling Photo Session

A Lovely Spokane Maternity Session

& Family Sessions.

I have known Jen since I was 12 years old so this maternity photo session is extra special for me. We began at their Spokane home for some intimate, but not-too-intimate bedroom photos. I love these settings because it shows our couple comfortable in their own home waiting for their new addition to join them. Once I was satisfied that we achieved the images I wanted, we headed over to a local park where we still had a bit of snow on the ground which always makes for a nice setting. My black and white photos are just mesmerizing me in this session! Of course it helps to have two gorgeous people who know how to at least appear comfortable and relaxed in front of a camera, but the sun came out just a bit which provided the contrast we needed! Cannot wait to meet our little guy!!!
Anytime a lady takes the time to have her makeup professionally done for a photo shoot (and has an awesome friend to do a spectacular application) is worthy of recognition. Alyssa Walsh with Gloss Makeup Artistry did a fantastic job with Jen’s makeup…as always, I highly recommend considering a professional makeup artist like Alyssa work with you for any professional photo session!Candid Maternity Behind Closed Doors black and white maternity Great Maternity Photos Spokane Pregnancy Photos Window Maternity Photos Outdoor Maternity Photos Snowy Maternity Photos Beautiful Maternity Photos Beautiful Spokane Maternity Photos Beautiful Outdoor Photography Candid Maternity Photography Crystal Madsen Spokane Maternity Photography Maternity Baby Blocks Sexy Window Maternity Photos

Making Memories During A Family Photo Session

& Family Sessions.

Kelli and Randy both had their parents in town for the holidays so we jumped at the chance of photographing all 3 generations at Manito Park. We knew we only had a limited time since it was pretty darn cold out and little toes go numb quickly, so I worked my magic and got some images that will be cherished for years on end. Its not every day you get great candid photos of grandmas and grandpas laughing while holding their precious grandbabies…tear. Here are a handful of my favorites.

Winter Wonderland Snow Pics

& Family Sessions.

The day before I left for my destination wedding in the Turks & Caicos Islands, I met up with the Ray family for some snowy family portraits. We didn’t have enough snow for any of our likings in Spokane, so we agreed to truck up the windy drive to Mount Spokane where we were guaranteed to find some fresh snow. As we get about half way up the mountain, I see Kristie flashing her lights behind me indicating we need to pull over. To my delightful surprise, poor little Brayden had vomited ALL OVER their backseat. While I helped clean up the carseat and seat belts we discussed when the next time we would all be available to try our session again. It wasn’t looking like we’d be able to meet up again for at least another few weeks since I was traveling and the holiday season was approaching, and Brayden seemed to be feeling fine…so we decided to take 10 minutes to see what we could capture while we were surrounded in snow.
We were in the parking lot of Bear Creek Lodge so I asked the owner Sam if he’d be okay if we walked around a bit and took a few pics. We walked across the street and got as close to the creek as possible where a collection of evergreens and deciduous trees lined the bank and provided a winter wonderland backdrop for our little family’s perfect portraits.

A Browne’s Addition Autumn Engagement

& Engagement Sessions, Family Sessions.

Jeremy and Nicky are two of our closest friends. When she announced to the facebook world their engagement by posting a picture of her ring, I called her immediately…which was apparently too soon because she was still emotional and couldn’t talk. I guess I should have been a bit more considerate and waited an hour or so…but I was just too excited!!!
We were already discussing scheduling a family session in the autumn season so we could capture Spokane’s awesome fall colors, so we decided to combine a family session and an engagement session!
Browne’s Addition is a National Historical District located to the west of Spokane’s city center. The well preserved neighborhood offers impressive mansions, maple tree-lined sidewalks, and even a revamped commercial district which provides a coffee shop, restaurants, and shopping. This vibrant intersection inspired me to begin our photo session right in the middle of the street using the decorated roundabout.
Another accent that the district holds in which I absolutely love are their bus stops. They’re not your normal every-day poles with a little blue sign. When you wait for a bus in Browne’s Addition you get to sit upon a wooden bench which is placed under a black ornate covering. The first time I saw one of these, I pictured a couple snuggling up together embracing and sharing kisses…which is exactly what I had Nicky and Jeremy do on our rainy autumn day.
Not only do the streets offer great photo opportunities, but there is also a gorgeous park littered with giant deciduous trees as well as evergreens. As the four of us walked the trails in the park, we had no problems finding the perfect backdrop to stop to take a photo, not to mention the perfectly painted gazebo placed in the middle of the park.
I loved documenting my friends’ love for one another and celebrating two families becoming one. Love you guys!!!

Beautiful Spokane Fall Family Portraits

& Family Sessions.

An absolute bonus to being a multi-dimensional photographer here in Spokane is that I have the opportunity to capture moments and memories for people over and over again, for their different occasions.

I met Kayla and Ryan when they hired me to photograph their maternity portraits.  From there we continue to work together and I am lucky enough to watch their family grow through my lens.  I photographed their beautiful baby girl Jadyn’s newborn session and now at 6 months I was able to come back into their lives to capture the new memories that they have made as a family.

One of the best pieces of working with people repeatedly is that each time  it is a new session, a new idea, and truly new people.  I love being able to photograph people at different points in their lives, because they can always look back at the photographs and enjoy the memories.  This time around we hit fall and the colors were amazing in their neighborhood at Lincoln Park.  We were able to capture Jadyn’s sweet personality and Kayla and Ryan’s love for her perfectly as we walked the park.

I hope to be so lucky to continue to work with this beautiful family.  It has been such a pleasure and joy to see their lives change as they fall more in love with each other and their little girl.
